Case Study

This study describes the hardware and networking components required by the owner of “Home solutions Inc.” for two computers, a business desktop personal computer and a gamer pc for his son. The two computers will have to be networked and probably connected to the internet. This document describes all the networking components, and their related costs. It also describes the various reasons why the specific hardware and networking standards were chosen over their market competitors. The document also explains the networking details for the two personal computers, the business computer and the gamer pc for the son.

Hardware and networking components

Business personal computer

Acer Desktop Computer Aspire AXC-703G, Intel core i3

This desktop computer is best suited for business purposes, due to its high processing speed and the most up to date technology.

Personal computers with core i3 processors are not as powerful as the i7 or even core i5 computers, but they are great for moderate tasks and are less expensive.

This processor has a clock speed of 3.6GHz, which is ideal for single thread tasks such as displaying word documents and excel sheets- common tasks in offices.  Similarly, these computers, running on core i3 dual core processor uses less electric power compared to their counterparts.  This computer has a cache memory size of 3MB, which is used to speed up computer operations, by shortening the time the processor takes to fetch contents from the memory. This processor also employs pipelining and parallelism techniques to take advantage of the multiple processing elements in the dual core architecture- which improves performance.

The Acer aspire AXC computer is installed with DDR3 random access memories. Double data rate (DDR) memories transfer data twice as fast as their single data rate counterparts. DDR3 is the latest technology of the DDR series, which runs on lower voltages, consumes less power and transfers data at a rate of almost 12.8GB per second. Acer aspire AXC runs two module of DDR, greatly improving performance.

This computer is installed with a 500GB internal hard drive, which is connected using Serial advance technology attachment (SATA) interface.  SATA interface is used over the parallel Advance technology attachment due to its faster data transfer rate and fewer cable size, and pins (7). This internal disk space is enough to cater for moderate business needs; it can however be supplemented using external hard disks, flash disks and another portable storage media.

The Acer aspire AXC-703-G desktop computer is available at a cost of US $400, which is fairly cheap considering the power and features.

The machine is equipped with a DVD+R writer, which can be used to copy and burn files to DVDs, and for system back-up disks. The writer can also be used for system restore from a back-up disk.

The best screen for this pc is Acer S1 Series S271HLCBID full HD 27 inch LED monitor, which costs US $289. This monitor has a resolution of 1920X 1080 p ad thus produces very high quality display. it’s also big enough and cheaper for its properties. This screen can take input from VGA, HDMI and DVI cable, making it a multipurpose screen.

Mouse

The pc could use an Acer wireless optical mouse matte black, which has the shape to fit in hand, is light weight and relatively cheap at a cost of US $49. Acer mouse are durable and cost effective.

Keyboard

Acer USB keyboards come at a cost of around US $58. These keyboards have a good layout of keys, giving users an easy tie while using. They are also cost effective and durable.

VGA and Power cables

The pc is connected to power using two BYTECC model POWERCORD- 6k 6ft. 18AWG power cable, one for the monitor and another for tower pc. These cables come at a combined cost of US $20.

The VGA cable is used to connect the monitor to the tower pc, for display purposes. The appropriate cable for this PC set up is the VGA 15PIN MALE TO MALE 1.5M cable. This cable is strong, durable and with the appropriate length for connecting the pc to monitor.

Gamer personal computer

CyberpowePC Gamer Ultra GUA3100A Gaming Desktop- AMD FX-4300 Quad Core. This desktop pc has all the characteristics required for a modern gaming machine.

The pc has a quad core I5 processor, which is fast enough in running multi-threaded applications such as games. The processor is also efficient in pipelining and parallelism, further improving performance while running at a clock speed of 3.8 GHz.

The machine has 8GB DDR3 ram, which is the latest technology of the DDR series, which runs on lower voltages, consumes less power and transfers data at a rate of almost 12.8GB per second. This high memory enables it to run gamming applications faster- with the help of a 10 MB cache memory

This computer is installed with a 1TB internal hard drive, which is connected using Serial advance technology attachment (SATA) interface.  SATA interface is used over the parallel Advance technology attachment due to its faster data transfer rate and fewer cable size, and pins (7). This disk space is appropriate for storing and running big game applications, while it can also be supplemented using other external storage media if needed.

24X DVD writer, this can be used to run games form DVDs, and also back-up games.

Mouse and keyboard

The pc comes with HP mouse and keyboards, which are durable and cost effective. The keyboard keys are strong to resist the continuous operation process associated with gaming.

VGA and power Cables

These cables are used to connect the tower pc to the power supply and to the monitor.

Monitor

The gaming PC is fitted with a 27-inch display screen, with a resolution of 1920 X 1080. This display resolution is ideal and clear for games.

Networking components

Cisco WS-C2960X-48TS-l switch

This switch connects to the modem and distributes internet signals to the two computers, through CAT-6 Ethernet cables. Cat-6 cables are the latest cable technology that offers very fast data transfer rates, compared to previously used CAT-4 cables.

Modem

This modem connects the two computers to the internet, via the switch. it receives internet signals form the internet service provider and taps them into the network.

The two pcs are networked using the star topology, using CAT-6 Ethernet cables, they are all connected to the switch ports, forming the star topology.
